Cap Verde, a long-form Republic of Cape Verde (or more exactly, Republic of the Cape Verde Islands), in Portuguese Cabo Verde and Republica de Cabo Verde, is an island state of West Africa consisting of an archipelago of ten volcanic islands. Located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal, it covers an area of about 4,000 km2. Praia, the capital, is 644 kilometers from the peninsula of Cape Verde in Senegal and the island of Sal is 680 kilometers from the southwestern coast of Mauritania. The archipelago is divided into two series of islands : to the south the islands of Sotavento (Brava, Fogo, Santiago and Majo) and to the north the islands of Barlavento (Boa Visto, Sal, São Nicolau, Santa Luzia Vicente and Santo Antão). Santiago alone comprises more than half of the population of the country, including the capital Praia. Praia ("beach" in Portuguese) is the largest city as well as the capital of Cape Verde. It is located on the island of Santiago which is also the largest of the nine inhabited islands of the archipelago. It had about 124,661 inhabitant in 2008.

The city has a commercial port allowing exports of coffee, suger cane and tropical fruits. Its economy is also based on the fishing industry.

In the district known as Plateau, the capital is home to public buildings such as the Presidential Palace, built at the end of the 19th century to serve as a residence for the Portuguese governor. The old city hall, a building with a classical facade ans a square central tower, the Nossa Senhora da Graça chuch of classical architecture, the ethnographic museum and the Monument to Diogo Gomes, a Portuguese navigator, The island of Santiago in 1460.
